Final Dissemination Event Brussels

Motivated by the ever-growing importance of embedded systems and cyberphysical systems, not only for ICT itself, but also for mainstream sectors of the economy the European Commission held a conference on Cyber-Physical Systems: Uplifting Europe’s innovation capacity in Brussels, from 29th-30th October. The two-day conference was featured by ARTEMIS, the Embedded Computing Systems Initiative and Steinbeis-Europa-Zentrum. With a view on how to reinforce European industrial competitiveness through research and innovation, the event brought together high profile experts from the embedded systems and Cyber-Physical Systems community in order to discuss their current and future research agendas. Likewise the conference presented an opportunity for innovators and industry to assess the current standing of innovation activities and opportunities in the Systems of Systems (SoS) field. For European industry it is the ultimate challenge to grasp these opportunities and help unleashing the full potential of Systems of Systems Engineering. Whereas the first conference day comprised an outlook on the new EC Program for Research and Innovation - H2020 -, key note speeches from industry and ARTEMIS, and success stories from FP7 projects, the Road2SOS project held its fi nal dissemination event on the second conference day. During a workshop session dedicated to Systems of Systems, the fi nal project results as well as the roadmaps from three domains: i) integrated multi-site industrial production ii) multi-modal traffi c control and iii) emergency and crisis management were presented. The Road2SoS project partners took the chance to exchange their views and opinions with European Commission officials and other key stakeholders of the SoS field. The overall message that developing systems of systems present many technical, organisational, political and sociological challenges and benefits across all domains was made clear and well received by all partners and participants present. The discussion on the Road2SoS project and its domain specific roadmaps identifi ed the ultimate need for demonstration and application in particular. In addition, experts agreed that business models have yet to emerge and that there is a need for more investment in research and demonstration to encounter the unclear benefits and risk benefit ratio in the development of SoS. This was also underpinned by concerns about stability, security and privacy issues as well as intellectual property (IPR) and the social acceptance of all-encompassing IT systems.

Case Studies

25th June 2013, the Road2SoS case study series has started with the first case at the European Institute for Energy Research (EIFER) in Karlsruhe, Germany.

Dissemination workshop series started

Outputs from Road2SoS were presented at the Institute for Manufacturing’s annual Briefing Day on 21st May. Speaking in front of an audience of over 100 industrial practitioners, Dr Simon Ford introduced the concept of system-of-systems to participants before going on to describe the roadmapping conducted within the multi-site industrial production domain in Road2SoS. Following the presentation, Simon and Nicky Athanassopoulou fielded questions from interested companies who were posi¬tive about engaging with the project further through in-company case study workshops.
In the remaining months of the Road2SoS project, a total of eight similar workshops are foreseen to disseminate the developed roadmaps in the domains of integrated multi-site industrial production, distributed energy generation and smart grids, multi-modal traffic control, and emergency & crisis management to target audiences.

Further dissemination workshops:
20th June, Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), Madrid
21st June, PRODIGY, Palma
3rd July, Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionstechnik und Automatisierung (IPA), Stuttgart
24th October, Laboratoire d’électronique des technologies de l’information (CEA), Belfort

If you are interested in participating in one of the workshops, please feel free to contact Dr. Meike Reimann.

March 20, 2013. Workshop session with COMPASS project

On March 18, 2013 a joint workshop has been held at Insiel S.p.A., Trieste by the members of the COMPASS project and the Road2SoS project to discuss roadmapping approaches and study interim Road2SoS results. The workshop has been a fruitful event and we thank our colleagues from the COMPASS project for their interest in the Road2SoS approach and results and the fruitful discussion.

Oct 26, 2013. Roadmapping workshops series concluded

In the last seven weeks, four roadmapping workshops have been conducted with experts from each of the four application domains examined in the Road2SoS project. Involved experts have contributed greatly in very intense workshops. We have received rich input which is in the process of being reviewed by the Road2SoS domain experts.

We thank everyone who joined us for the workshops - your expertise has provided us with a multitude of important perspectives and contributed the input for us to develop holistic, valid roadmaps.

IEEE International Conference on Systems of Systems Engineering

The IEEE recently held its 7th Internal Conference on System of Systems Engineering in Genoa, Italy, bringing together over 100 academic and industry experts. Simon Ford of IfM-ECS represented Road2SoS at the conference. He gave a plenary talk on Road2SoS alongside the three other SoSE projects currently funded by the EU, T-AREA-SoS, COMPASS and DANSE, and presented a paper on the work undertaken within the multi-site manufacturing domain. The conference was an excellent opportunity to share our work with this community, to consolidate existing relationships with the other EU projects, and to forge new connections. Road2SoS anticipates contributing to next year’s conference, which will be held in Maui, Hawaii, and will see the dissemination of the final roadmaps.

22nd Annual INCOSE International Symposium (IS 2012)

The 22nd Annual INCOSE International Symposium (IS 2012) took place from 9 to 12 July 2012 in Rome, Italy with over 700 active participants. In the context of the symposium, Prof. Michael Henshaw of the University of Loughborouh, UK held a panel session with the goal to review, discuss, and extend a set of research priorities in the field of System of Systems Engineering identified in the EU co-financed T-Area-SoS project. As one of the contributors to the panel, Christian Albrecht of the Road2SoS project presented the research challenges and practical problems which exist from the perspective of Road2SoS.

Further input to the panel was provided by representatives of further EU co-financed projects in the System of Systems field. A voting involving the panel audience served to rank the identified research challenges according to priority. Results of the voting are available in the contribution of Michale Henshaw to the current issue of the INCOSE insight magazine. The INCOSE International Symposium, being an international conference for system engineers, was an important event to achieve visibility for the field of Systems of Systems Engineering - the importance of which was nicely outlined by Dr. Alkis Konstantellos who presented the European Commission’s efforts in this new field. Next year’s INCOSE International Conference is going to take place in Philadelphia, PA (USA).
